Area II's CCIJ2*-L team triumphantly claimed a silver medal this year, with some hard work by the entire tribe over the three days of intense championship competition. Dressage began with Area II holding fifth place among the ten CCIJ2*-L teams from all over the United States and Canada. After walking Ian Stark’s course, it was clear it would not be a dressage contest, and when the dust cleared on Saturday, we saw a new set of leaders in the Team standings.

After cross-country, Area VIII's team, comprised of Elizabeth Henry (Charlotte La Bouff), Cierra Daratony (Rio De Janeiro), Grace Elliott (Ballylanders Finn McCool), and Tate Northrop (Fine with Me), grabbed the lead from Area IV, with 90.2 ahead of Area II in second (104.2) and Area IV fell to third (105.2).

At the second veterinary inspection on Sunday, Area II’s Madison Chisholm, out of an abundance of caution, withdrew her Beechcraft in the hold, leaving just three riders to carry the banner for the team.

Show jumping saw Area II riders rise to the challenge, knowing there was less than two points between them and the Area IV team, and the three remaining team members all jumped double-clear clutch rounds to solidify a Silver medal position. In addition, individual Jules Elliott on Buckharo also jumped a double clear round to finish in 17th place, one of the biggest movers on the results chart, coming up from 33rd after dressage.

Area II’s two other individuals, Colette Leber, and Sofie Harangozo, both completed in 22nd and 31st place respectively. Area II had six horses finish double clear cross country.

Charlotte Babbitt emerged as the individual victor of the CCIJ2*-L, while the Area VIII came out on top of the team competition.

Area II’s only CCIOY3*-S entrant, Megan Loughnane and Linford, were no strangers to NAYC competition, returning to the championship after their first outing at Rebecca Farms in 2017. This time around, they began with a bang, laying down an outstanding dressage test to be in 2nd position going into cross-country. They made easy work of the 3* course, coming in clear of jumping faults and just 3.2 time faults, to stand fourth overnight individually and her scrambled team of Area I/II was in first. However, a minor injury to Linford caused Megan to make the hard decision to withdraw her partner on Sunday morning. This moved her team to Bronze position, which they maintained after show jumping.

William Kidwell emerged as the individual victor of the CCIY3*-S, while Area III/VII came out on top of the team competition.

TRAINING THREE DAY EVENT

For the first time, The Event at Rebecca Farm offered a Young Riders training three-day event team competition in addition to the FEI Young Riders divisions. Area II was represented by Jackson Dillard and Layla Q and Caitlin O’Rourke and On A Mission. Area II scrambled with riders from Areas VI and VII for a T3D team.

After dressage on Thursday, Jackson Dillard’s 25.8 test on Layla Q in Division B led the entire T3D section, with a performance that judges called, “very professional” and one of the best they had ever seen at the level. Caitlin O’Rourke’s test was even and correct at 37.1 which tied for 18th in Division A.

Endurance day on Friday saw the full four phases of roads and tracks, steeplechase, and cross-country being held over the beautiful ground and scenic fields of Rebecca Farms. As was expected, Jackson Dillard held his first place slot with a completely clear day, with no time faults or penalties added; and Caitlin O’Rourke also laid down a perfectly clean day as well, moving up ten places to a tie for 8th.IMG 20190726 080543 1

After passing the final veterinary inspection with flying colors on Saturday morning, both riders had perfect trips in show jumping, and Jackson Dillard remained in first place to achieve the win in Division B, while Caitlin O’Rourke moved up to 7th individually in Division A. The team classification was very competitive, with the top three eventual medal-winning teams all within about 10 points of one another. The Area II/Area VI/Area VII scrambled team finished 6th.

Area II Chefs were Holly Covey and Chris Donovan, the Executive Coach was Pam Wiedemann this year.  Both put in a huge amount of hard work to see the various teams pull together and win medals across all the divisions. Both deserve a huge thank-you for their work behind the scenes prior to the championship as well for leadership and assistance at the competition.

Throughout the competition, tributes poured in for Area II for the tragic loss of Area II T3D teammate, Ashley Stout, and her horse Avant Garde, both of whom died in a training accident just a week before the competition. #ride4Ashley was seen all over the grounds, and a special tribute was paid to her at the Young Riders party on Thursday evening; organizer Sara Broussard was especially gracious to Area II people. Blue #ride4Ashley pins were seen on many competitors throughout the week in support of Area II riders. The Area II Young Riders and adult coordinators and coach are deeply grateful to all the many eventers from all over the United States, and to Rebecca Farm and Sara Broussard, who gave us their sympathy, support, and caring throughout the week.
